What is different about Catholic Schools? When you walk into a school you immediately get a ‘feel’ about the place - it could be the way the school looks, the way you are welcomed or the friendliness of the learners. Ethos defines and displays the core beliefs of the school, and is closely linked to its value system. This is called the Ethos of the school. This ethos should be….

The CIE supports schools to live out their identity and tradition as Catholic schools. We offer Religious Education workshops and materials for Religious Education teachers. Other programmes promoted by the institute include the Child Safeguarding Program, Peer Education training and the Building Peace in Catholic Schools Program. CIE works with clusters of schools to train SGBs in their roles and responsibilities and to offer support and coaching to principals. Teacher development workshops take place where funding is available, for example Foundation Phase Literacy. These provide much needed practical skills training to youth and the unemployed. The CIE Thabiso Skills Institute will be using the funds over three years to transform skills training for disadvantaged youth in Baking, Merchandising and End-user Computing. Starting with this edition, we’ll be including ideas for putting ethos into practice, suggestions for inter-religious dialogue, activities for exploring environmental issues and resources for using in the classroom. Catholic Education be emailed straight to your inbox. We strive to give every child in our schools the education they deserve. The Catholic Institute of Education is an NGO that delivers programmes to Catholic schools, and the CIE Investment Company and Education Services were developed with a long term vision of ensuring our sustainability. We have always focused our work largely in rural and peri-urban schools, situated in the poorer, less developed parts of southern Africa. 72% of Catholic schools in South Africa are public schools and there are over 6,000 teachers and 160,000 learners in these schools, who represent diverse cultures and religions, with Catholics forming the minority. Our mission is to serve and strengthen the Catholic education network so as to enable Catholic schools to offer values-based, quality education to learners in an environment that is conducive to their physical, emotional, moral, intellectual and spiritual development as national and global citizens.
