LE thatching was founded by Lourens Engelbrecht in November 1980.

Specialising in Thatch Roof Construction for over 30 years.

Lourens Engelbrecht is the founder member of LE Thatching. He started the business in November 1980 with one team consisting of one thatcher and two assistant labourers. The quality of workmanship that LE Thatching offers exceeds all standard and specification requirements set by the South African Thatching Association, South African Bureau of Standards and the C.S.I.R. Visit our Project Gallery to see the work that has been done. Lourens Engelbrecht is one of the few european thatching contractors in South Africa that can actually perform the art of thatching himself, thus making him very aware of any flaws in the craft and knowing how to rectify them. Having a passion for thatching and perfection is not just a way of life it is a forte. Many people are still overwhelmed by what carbon footprint and eco-friendly really means. Thatching is by far the most natural product to use on your roof as it is harvested off the land and used without going through processes to create an actual roof covering. With the high thermal value of thatch there is no need for any other products to create insulation. Due to global warming, temperature variations are becoming more extreme Aesthetically thatching is one of the most pleasing roof construction finishes. With high thermal values, energy saving is guaranteed. The myth has been busted that thatch roofs are excessively more expensive than roof tiles. Thatch needs no thermal insulation, guttering systems, fascias, ceilings, painting etc. It actually provides extra ceiling space due to the 45 degree pitch giving the home a stronger sense of volume. There is no overnight cure to restore our planet, but by opting for a thatch roof one is definitely on the right track to making a difference. The structure is of timber poles storing CO² for the life of the building and the actual thatch is also a natural product which stores CO. Thatch is expected to last for many years, during which most of the CO² is not released, thus a thatch roof is the best choice. We invite you to take responsibility and do a little more to educate South Africans to recognize their individual roles.
