Over time though, ownership changed hands and the entity became a private company, with one of the original founders and his family being the main shareholders of the company. The business is situated in the heart of the white maize production area, where enough quality maize is produced to ensure a constant supply of raw materials. The location of the business in the central part of South Africa also contributes to an effective distribution system whereby products can be delivered to clients on a daily basis. Over the period of 15 years since inception, the mill was constantly expanded and upgraded with modern equipment, which contributed to the production of constant good quality maize meal products. This expansion enabled the company to satisfy the growing needs of existing customers and to expand the footprint in Southern Africa. Today the equipment of the mill consists of reliable components with a capacity of 15 tons/hour. Over the period since inception, Thuso Mills developed the Star and Thuso brands, both of which are well known and respected in the market as a result of the constant good quality products and service. Super maize meal is distributed under the Star brand, special maize meal under the Thuso brand and samp under both the Star and Thuso brands. The company’s products are distributed and sold in all the geographical areas of South Africa, except the Western Cape, through a loyal and reliable customer base. The client base consists of wholesale group outlets, independent wholesale stores and retail stores. Thuso Mills plays an important role in the rural community of Bothaville, seeing as it’s one of the biggest production facilities and employers in the region. The vast majority of purchases of goods and services are done in the town and surrounding areas. The company is actively involved in a number of social responsibility projects that support organisations involved in the upliftment of the needy. The recruitment, development and training of quality personnel are important aspects of the business and the company strives to recruit and retain the best available personnel as well as to supply structured and continuous training. The company also developed comprehensive and attainable employment equity and skill development plans. Personnel are also encouraged and assisted to develop themselves through further studies and training courses. Comprehensive performance incentive schemes for both management and other personnel monitor and recognise personnel’s performance and ensure that personnel accept ownership of their responsibilities. The company’s senior personnel have a wealth of experience in the milling industry and as such are widely recognised in the industry for their knowledge and experience.
